Eating Healthy on Campus

The most common question Campus Dining hears from students is “how do I eat healthy on campus?” The dining locations provide many options, no matter what you are in mood for. Many students get into the same rut and eat the same foods day and in and day out. With over 19 dining venues to choose from, it’s simple to find new and different foods! Be sure to mix and match items often to get a variety of nutrients, textures and flavors.

Look for the RD Approved Symbol

Campus Dining has created a simple way to identify healthier food options. Just look for the “RD approved” symbol around campus and incorporate these items into your meal, as they are a healthier option. The choices may be:

Focusing on balanced, nourishing foods and meals

The RD Approved program was designed to assist the campus community in making choices that align with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The guidelines encourage a focus on eating a healthful diet — one that focuses on foods and beverages that help achieve and maintain a healthy weight, promote health, and prevent disease.

Dietary Guidelines for Americans tell us to:

Encourage/Increase:Limit:
  • Nutrient dense foods from all food groups
  • Whole grains
  • Vegetables — especially dark green, red, orange, beans, peas
  • Fruits
  • Low-fat milk products including yogurt and cheese
  • Variety of protein foods: seafood, lean meats, eggs, beans, peas, nuts, seeds
  • Use oils to replace solid fats
  • Sugar sweetened beverages
  • Foods with saturated fats/cholesterol
  • Sodium intake
  • Refined grains
  • Added sugars

When in doubt, go without! Most options on campus are customizable, so feel free to ask for a substitute item or “without” an item. This is a simple way to make most options vegan or vegetarian.
